El Día Después

The game came just days after many of our players were away on international duty, with the main focus being the absence of key attackers on either side. Negredo pulled out of the Spain squad and will be out of action for around a month, whereas Falcao, Diego, Arda Turan (and Godin) were all unavailable for Atleti. Despite this, most of the fans remained optimistic in the hope that we could get the win we desperately needed against a direct rival. With both teams level on 32 points going into the game, three points would have been vital after our winless February in La Liga.

Squad news

Cholo decided to pack the midfield with four primarily central players in Mario, Tiago, Gabi and Koke, with Adrian and Salvio having to provide the forward ammunition. Juanfran unsurprisingly kept his place at right-back with Dominguez the man chosen to replace the suspended Godin. Reserve team midfielders Luque and Cidoncha were drafted into the squad, although the latter didn’t make the 18.

Post-match

A point gained or two points lost? Whilst under the circumstances, a 1-1 draw away at Sevilla without four key players is not the end of the world (for example last year we came to the Sanchez Pizjuan without Kun and Reyes and lost 3-1), a win was in our grasp and perhaps we would have gotten it if not for a momentary lapse in defence. Sevilla thought they had won the game late on but ex-canterano Manu was correctly ruled offside, and so I would imagine that both teams will feel aggrieved by the point. It doesn’t really help anybody but our rivals for the final Champions League spot.

Positives

  • Salvio is making steady improvement. His goal was very well taken and he looked dangerous on other occasions mainly in the first half, which is a relief. I suggested that perhaps he needed a run of games to show what he can do, so it will be interesting to see whether he remains in the team when Arda and Falcao return.
  • The draw does give us the head-to-head advantage over Sevilla on away goals, which could prove vital come the end of the season.
  • Miranda and Juanfran continue to impress in defence, and fully deserve to be the first choices at the moment. Some may disagree but I have also been impressed with Mario SuĂĄrez since Cholo’s return. I’m personally a big fan of his and see him looking more like the player who ended last season, doing the simple things well, making good use of the ball and clearing up any danger in front of the backline.

Negatives

  • In the second half when we needed a goal, there just didn’t seem to be much urgency and we failed to create any real chances. As an outfit we look much better than Manzano’s team, but this is one of the problems we faced under his management. It was always going to be difficult without key attacking players but still, it was disappointing.
  • Despite some good individual performances, we did display some defensive frailties and let Sevilla have more chances than Simeone would have liked. It’s important not to lose our rhythm in this area and continue with the strength we showed under his first 6 weeks in charge, as the goal we conceded was certainly an avoidable one.
  • Filipe picked up his fifth booking and will miss the Granada game next week, although this isn’t all bad as it should give Silvio a chance to return to the starting line-up at left-back.

Statistics

Sevilla At. Madrid
Goals BabĂĄ 52′ Salvio 8′
Possession (%) 55 45
Lost balls 79 82
Recovered balls 55 54
Shots 6/18 6/8
Yellow cards 2 5
Red cards 0 0
Corners 1 6
Fouls 15 21
Offsides 2 4
Penalties 0 0

Considering the amount of midfielders we had on the pitch, I think the possession stats are pretty poor, and we could have taken the game to Sevilla more in the second half especially. Shots wise we are pretty even, and we did manage to test Palop on a decent amount of occasions. Perhaps a few more efforts at goal wouldn’t have hurt though, as we struggled to work the ball in and around the box as the game wore on. Yet again the card count is high, but you can’t expect anything different with the officiating in this league.

Man of the match

Perhaps it’s a little harsh on Salvio but for me the best player was Juanfran. He is growing into his role at right-back and looks completely at home there now. Some were concerned that he would struggle against better sides although that hasn’t proven to be the case. He handled Reyes pretty well and had some impressive runs down the right flank.

Also good:Salvio

Yesterday’s Fabiano Eller

I don’t think anybody played particularly badly, although I would have liked to have seen more from Adrian. There was pressure on him to deliver in the absence of Falcao especially, but he had a very quiet game and seemed to drop deep a lot when we needed him to provide an outlet up top. We have to point out that he didn’t have great support though.

I agree with your on AdriĂĄn. Everytime I saw him he was called offside.

Barca was a big test for Juanfran and he passed. Would be nice to see Silvio play but I think DomĂnguez will get the nod ahead of him to play.

Unfortunately you may be right Husky. He’s had many opportunities to prove his class and hasn’t taken them. Is he good enough for Atleti? Me thinks not.
